What v13 means for your prep

EC-Council markets v13 under an AI label, and its course outline threads AI through several modules: AI-driven ethical hacking in the introduction, AI-powered OSINT in footprinting, scanning with AI, AI-powered vulnerability assessment tools, and AI-based malware. These sit inside the 20 modules as subtopics, under a nine-domain blueprint in force since April 2024.

The exam follows blueprint v5.0, effective April 2024. EC-Council still links it from its certification page and embeds it in its 2026 candidate handbook (v7.3), so that is the document to trust for domain weights; the CEH exam format page charts them.

Exam day looks the same on paper whatever your book says: EC-Council lists 125 multiple-choice questions, four hours, and a cut score set per form between 60% and 85%, taken by remote proctoring or at a Pearson VUE center.

A v12 book is still worth keeping. Spend your checking time on the items below, where older material drifts, and skip re-reading chapters that match the v13 module list.

Check an older book against these

  • AI subtopics in footprinting, scanning, vulnerability analysis and malware
  • OWASP Top 10 edition: the v13 outline names 2021, and OWASP published a 2025 edition. Note which edition a question names.
  • OWASP Mobile Top 10 2024, named in the mobile module
  • MITRE ATT&CK tactic names: the current matrix lists Stealth where Defense Evasion used to be
  • CVSS: version 4.0 replaces the Temporal metric group with Threat
  • DoD 8570 references, which EC-Council now describes as replaced by DoD 8140
